![]() ![]() I had fun practicing it in different scales: large, medium and small enough to be considered stippling. I’ve done hours of meandering, but it has actually been a while since I stitched out this motif. We definitely start with the basics here. Just give me a doable design and let me quilt the whole quilt. It’s beautiful, but it’s just not my thing right now. And that is my kind of quilting! I’m not sure I’ll ever be a custom quilter–the type that quilts each area of a quilt block differently. Something else that I liked is that all the machine quilting motifs that she teaches you is perfect to meander across a whole quilt (thus the name). The book is filled with Angela’s fun personality and encouragement that you should never, ever pick out your quilting mistakes. As a matter of fact, you can get a preview of the motifs covered in the book and a FAQ from Angela herself here. She really builds up the designs in a thoughtful way. Another thing I liked about it is that while it contains all the information that an absolute beginner needs (sewing machine feet, needles, thread, batting, etc.), the motifs ramp up quickly and it ends with some designs that are quite impressive. I’m a visual learner and this approach really appeals to me. I am not exactly a beginner, but I was intrigued by the step-by-step, photo tutorial style of this book. So, I will be working my way through this book along with my quilting and blogging friends, Vicki and Jen. When I heard that everyone’s quilting hero, Angela Walters had a new book out, called Free-Motion Meandering: A Beginners Guide to Machine Quilting, I definitely wanted to check it out. And I get inspired when new quilting books hit the stands. ![]() Are you ready to do some free motion quilting? On the tableau, cards are played by alternating colors in descending order from high to low. Cards of the same suit may be placed onto each ace in ascending order from low to high. The remaining cards are face down in the top left corner. The first starts with one card, the second with two cards, and so on to the seventh, which starts with seven cards. The table in online klondike solitaire has seven columns. Whether played online in a browser or with real playing cards, it is an ideal mind exercise and stress reliever, more popular now than ever before. Players don't need to shuffle and deal the cards for each hand, making game play more enjoyable. Microsoft has included the game as part of the Windows operating system since 1990. In the 1980s, personal computers made solitaire more popular. The game of Roosevelt was named after him, although his favorite solitaire game was Spider solitaire. Before this, there had been no literature about it, not even in such books as Abbe Bellecour's Academie des Jeux (1674), Charles Cotton's The Compleat Gamester (1674), and Bohn's Handbook of Games (1850), all of which are used as reference on card games. The first collection of solitaire card games in the English language was written by Lady Adelaide Cadogan with her book of Illustrated Games of Patience published in 1870. The outcome of a game could possibly have been thought to be a type of fortune telling. Other languages, such as Norwegian and Danish often use the word Kabal, which means secret knowledge, to describe these games. In modern France, the game is more often called réussite, which means success. In Britain, it is still often called Patience, because players do need patience to win a game. Playing by oneself probably came out of people enjoying practicing for competitive games. It was described as a competitive card game where players would take turns to play with separate decks of cards. It has its earliest written appearance in the 1783 edition of the German book of games, Das neue Königliche L'Hombre-Spiel, where it is referred to as Patiencespiel. It could just as likely have its roots in Germany or Scandinavia. But that doesn't necessarily mean it started in France. Several games are of French origin, such as La Belle Lucie, Le Cadran, La Nivernaise, Le Loi Salique. It's a bit of a mystery where solitaire comes from. ![]() Societies are seen as coherent, bounded and fundamentally relational constructs that function like organisms, with their various (or social institutions) working together in an unconscious, quasi-automatic fashion toward achieving an overall social equilibrium. The central concern of structural functionalism may be regarded as a continuation of the Durkheimian task of explaining the apparent stability and internal cohesion needed by societies to endure over time. ![]() ![]() "social bonds, based on specialization and interdependence, that are strong among members of industrial societies". Based on the metaphor above of an organism in which many parts function together to sustain the whole, Durkheim argued that complex societies are held together by " solidarity", i.e. In modern, complex societies, members perform very different tasks, resulting in a strong interdependence. Durkheim used the term " mechanical solidarity" to refer to these types of "social bonds, based on common sentiments and shared moral values, that are strong among members of pre-industrial societies". He proposed that such societies tend to be segmented, with equivalent parts held together by shared values, common symbols or (as his nephew Marcel Mauss held), systems of exchanges. In this view, Comte was followed by Émile Durkheim.Ī central concern for Durkheim was the question of how certain societies maintain internal stability and survive over time. Explanations of social phenomena had therefore to be constructed within this level, individuals being merely transient occupants of comparatively stable social roles. While one may regard functionalism as a logical extension of the organic analogies for societies presented by political philosophers such as Rousseau, sociology draws firmer attention to those institutions unique to industrialized capitalist society (or modernity).Īuguste Comte believed that society constitutes a separate "level" of reality, distinct from both biological and inorganic matter. Anthony Giddens, The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration functionalism strongly emphasises the pre-eminence of the social world over its individual parts (i.e. Biology has been taken to provide a guide to conceptualizing the structure and function of social systems and analyzing evolution processes via mechanisms of adaptation. In sociology, classical theories are defined by a tendency towards biological analogy and notions of social evolutionism:įunctionalist thought, from Comte onwards, has looked particularly towards biology as the science providing the closest and most compatible model for social science. For Talcott Parsons, "structural-functionalism" came to describe a particular stage in the methodological development of social science, rather than a specific school of thought. In the most basic terms, it simply emphasizes "the effort to impute, as rigorously as possible, to each feature, custom, or practice, its effect on the functioning of a supposedly stable, cohesive system". Functionalism addresses society as a whole in terms of the function of its constituent elements namely norms, customs, traditions, and institutions.Ī common analogy, popularized by Herbert Spencer, presents these parts of society as "organs" that work toward the proper functioning of the "body" as a whole. This approach looks at both social structure and social functions. This approach looks at society through a macro-level orientation, which is a broad focus on the social structures that shape society as a whole, and believes that society has evolved like organisms. Structural functionalism, or simply functionalism, is "a framework for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability". ![]() ![]() More importantly, it supports lossless quality conversion at a fast speed. ![]() Although this free converter cannot convert MP3 to MIDI, it can convert many other popular formats, such as FLAC to MP3, MOV to MP3, GIF to MP4, etc. Meanwhile, it is an easy-to-use video & audio converter.
